Jamia Students Continue Protest for Union Restoration as University Warns of Legal Action
The Jamia Millia Islamia students' union restoration protest enters its 16th day as the university orders students to vacate the site, warns of legal action and faces criticism from CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka over Section 163 of the BNS.
Security forces remain deployed outside the university gates. Amid the continuing standoff, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leader Ashutosh Ranka launched an attack on the Centre, alleging that the government had found a solution to every problem in Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Despite the university administration's decision that elections would be held within 15 days of the approval of the union's constitution, protesting students have refused to withdraw their agitation. They are demanding a specific date for the elections and a deadline for approving the constitution.
Students raised slogans against the administration on Tuesday and opposed the decision to shift classes to online mode and shut down campus facilities during the ongoing protest.
Students Accuse University Administration of Crackdown
Protesting students also claimed that all university gates had been sealed. They alleged that security guards and the university's security adviser were handing students over to the police at the campus gates, leading to arbitrary detentions.
Students said the closure of the library and other campus facilities, along with the decision to conduct classes online, had caused considerable inconvenience.
Rehan Khan, among the students sitting on an indefinite hunger strike, has also been directed by the university to vacate the protest site immediately. The administration has warned of legal action if the order is not followed.
The university's notice, issued late Monday night, came as the protest entered its 16th day on Tuesday, with students continuing to press for the restoration of the student union and a clear timeline for the election process.
Ashutosh Ranka Targets Centre Over Section 163
The continuing standoff has also triggered political reactions.
Cockroach Janata Party leader Ashutosh Ranka shared a video clip related to Jamia on X and targeted the Centre over the restrictions imposed amid the protest.
The video shows the scene outside Gate No. 7 of Jamia Millia Islamia, including a barricade erected by security forces. A banner displayed on the barricade carries a warning that gatherings are prohibited due to the implementation of Section 163 of the BNS.
Reacting to the video, Ranka took a swipe at the central government, writing on X, "What a shameful time this is. First New Delhi and now Jamia, the central government has found a solution to every problem in Section 163 of the BNS."
With students refusing to withdraw their protest, the university administration insisting that the protest site be vacated and security forces remaining deployed outside the gates, the standoff over the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union continues.
